The National Monuments Service's description

On S-facing slope with quarry immediately to S. No visible surface trace of castle. Originally a Barry holding (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 208), Caherduggan became a possession of the Roches in the later Middle Ages (Ó Murchadha 1985, 134). Down Survey (1655-6) barony map shows castle here with mill to S and there are traditions relating to a settlement (CO025-153----) here; according to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 2, 11), person born in 1824 'remembered to have seen the remains of the old castle'. Both 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps show site of castle in middle of field but 1842 OS 6-inch map appears to show castle c. 120m to ESE, c. 10m W of road.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
