Water mill - horizontal-wheeled

In tillage, on gentle S-facing slope and just N of deep stream valley (dry at time of visit); circular enclosure (13562) a short distance to E. Though marked on 1937 OS 6-inch map as site of fulacht fiadh and mentioned as such by Bowman (1934, 420), no evidence of fulacht fiadh material was noted. Grove White (1905-25, vol. 2, 64-5) recounted a story of a man who, following a dream, dug for gold in an old rath (probably 13562). This led to the discovery of the remains of a horizontal wheeled mill, described as 'a perfect tank, twelve feet square, and three deep, made of black oak, each plank four inches thick, it resting upon four pillars or legs two feet high and one foot square. Into the tank was a shoot as if to convey water, one foot wide at the mouth and made of the same description of timber' (ibid.). No visible surface trace of site evident. (Rynne 1988, 329)
