The National Monuments Service's description

This road/trackway is referred to in the 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork - vol. 4 North Cork' (2000, 508) under the entry (no. 14283) for an unclassified castle (CO023-097----). The reference to the road is as follows: Traces of raised causeway survive, approaching site from W; according to Grove White (ibid. vol. 4, 168) this once incorporated 'a very ancient arched bridge', which Bowman (1934, 409) noted had been replaced by wooden bridge 'about 50 years ago.'

In pasture. Indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map and 1905 OS 6-inch map as roadway (c. 90m E-W) leading to site of Ballyheen Castle (CO023-097---); stream flowing along N side of W end, passes under roadway near centre flowing S wards. E half of road removed by 1937 OS 6-inch map. Short section of grass-covered causeway (long axis E-W c. 30m; N-S c. 4m) survives; hydraulic ram on top of causeway. Stream flows along N side of causeway and turns S near E end passing under road. Mid/late nineteenth century slightly raised tree lined roadway (Wth 3m) at W end. According to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 4, 168) 'under a causeway leading to it [Ballyheen Castle] there was until quite recently a very ancient arched bridge over a stream'. Also mentioned by Bowman (1934, 409), who noted that stone bridge had been replaced by wooden bridge and that it ran over 'an old road, about 20ft wide'.
