The National Monuments Service's description
In tillage. Graveyard depicted on 1842 OS 6-inch map as rectangular area (c. 25m E-W; c. 28m N-S) defined by broken line with church (14452) forming NW corner; shown as irregular enclosure (c. 25m E-W; c. 28m max. N-S), defined by broken line, on 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps. Graveyard now defined as unploughed, overgrown area around ruin of parish church of Subulter (14452); field clearance stones dumped in interior. No gravemarkers noted. Grove White (1905-25, vol. 4, 232) noted in 1905 that 'there have been no burials here in the memory of the inhabitants...burial ground not enclosed. No tombstone with inscription was visible.' Bowman (1934, 688) noted 'the base of the surrounding wall...3ft 3in thick' made with large stones, and gives maximum length and breadth of enclosure as '50 yards by 23 yards'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
