The National Monuments Service's description
A crossing point on Awbeg River, c. 500m to NW of Knocknanuss Hill where Battle of Knocknanuss (14694) took place in 1647. According to Bowman (1934, 685), it is said that Sir Alexander Mac Donnell, second in command of Confederate Army, was killed at this ford (see also Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 353). Marked on 1842 OS 6-inch map as 'Chieftain's Ford' further south along river (c. 1.1km to SSW), on boundary between Rathmaher and Lackaleigh townlands.
