The National Monuments Service's description

Local tradition (Healy 1988, 421) locates castle on site now occupied by farm buildings behind Marshalstown House (14916). House now demolished; no evidence of castle structure in farm buildings. A 1588 grant of lands in the area to Arthur Hyde included 'the castle and lands of Ballymariscall alias Marshallstowne' (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 2, 89). Marshalstown was on borderland between Condons and White Knights (Nicholls 1993, 187).

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
