The National Monuments Service's description

In graveyard (14558). No visible surface trace of two ancient churches in graveyard which Smith (1750, vol. 1, 314-5) described as 'still visible ... dedicated to St Bridget and ... the Virgin Mary'. Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 236) mentions 'some remains' in graveyard but neither church shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Church of St Bridget may have been earlier of two (pers. comm. D. Burdon); church of St Mary probably medieval parish church of Buttevant. Report of 1615 describes nave of parish church 'in repair', but chancel 'in ruins' (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 56). (Zajac et al. 1995, 17).

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
