The National Monuments Service's description

On gentle SE-facing slope. Originally a Barry castle, Bregogue said to have been maintained by Sir Philip Percival during mid-17th century wars and burned by the Irish in 1651 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 1, 300). According to Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 223), castle 'incorporated into the dwelling-house of Mr. Rogers', which Lewis names as Bregogue Castle; no such house named on 1842 OS 6-inch map. In 1909 Grove White (ibid., 300-1) visited a Miss Rogers, 'the present owner of Bregoge House', who informed him that 'her grandfather got part of it (Bregogue Castle) taken down, and the stones were used to build the present house'. Present house is 3-bay, 2-storey house with hipped roof of mid-19th-century appearance (see photograph ibid. opp. 300); 1842 OS 6-inch map shows house immediately S of present location indicating that house rebuilt after 1842. No visible remains of castle evident either in present house or on site of earlier house. Church (14454) and graveyard (14621) c. 150m to NNW.
