The National Monuments Service's description
On S-facing slope of Caroline Mountain in the Ballyhoura Mountain range. Indicated as circular enclosure (diam. c. 70m) on 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps. No visible surface trace of enclosure in rough mountain land in the process of being reclaimed. Upstanding circular enclosure visible in aerial photograph taken May 1977 (GSIAP, R645). 'Rifle Range (disused)', 'Lookouts' and 'Butts' are named on 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps in area surrounding enclosure, indicating that this was used as army training ground.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
