The National Monuments Service's description
On top of a Carron Mountain, on Cork/Limerick county boundary; second cairn (11814) c. 235m to ENE atop Little Carron. Circular mound of stones (diam. 32m; H 2.3m), partially covered with grass and heather; centre and S side disturbed where much of the cairn material has been removed; three small modern mounds inside N perimeter. According to Meagher (1988, 119), 'the old name of Corrin [Carron] was Cairn Fearadaigh, for underneath the stone mound are said to lie the bones of the chieftain of that name'. Grove White (1905-25, vol. 4, 230) refers to a stone fort here with 'diameter of 85 yards...walls 9 feet in thickness and 7 feet high'; no such feature is evident on this hill top. He (ibid.) describes walls of 'loose stones about nine feet thick and seven feet high...About eight different spots in the inside have the appearance of having been rooted up.' This description conforms with the current state of the robbed out cairn. Five mounds (15191, 15193, 15194, 15195, 15192) marked on OS 6-inch maps along county boundary to E and W.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
