The National Monuments Service's description
In pasture, on gentle SSE-facing slope. Grass-covered outline of structural foundations (c. 30m N-S; c. 25m E-W) indicating L-shaped structure or complex of structures. Well (diam. 0.5m), in centre of complex, covered by stone slab with rebate and fluted chamfer (possibly part of 16th-century window); local tradition says well was in castle kitchen. Section of tiered cornice, of late 17th/early 18th-century style, on corner of nearby farm building said to be associated with castle (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 4, 99). Castle of the Fitzgibbons (ibid., 96). To N of castle site is a shallow linear depression (CO007-039002-) running NE-SW, described in late 19th century as 'shallow rectangular ditch faced with stone'; this may be remains of 'handsome canal' referred to by Smith (1750, vol. 1, 306). Castle depicted on Down Survey (1655-6) (1655-6) barony map, with mill c. 1km to SW.
A linear feature associated with and physically related to the site of Milltown Castle was uncovered during archaeological monitoring. See Excavations 2003, 46, no. 202.
