Ringfort - cashel

Situated on the NW perimeter of the outer rampart of Mooghaun hillfort (CL042-074001-). A bivallate cashel comprising a subcircular area (34m NE-SW; 38m NW-SE) defined by a drystone wall (Wth 2m; H c. 2m) with an original entrance (Wth 2.3m) at NE. The interior is level apart from a raised pad of natural rock in the centre. There is a hut site (CL042-074005-) attached to the inside of the wall at N. A curving stone bank (Wth 1.8-2.5m; H 1-1.5m) c. 12m N of the cashel was identified by Westropp (1893, 282) and was traceable for a distance of 25m. Clearance in this area in 1994 as part of the Discovery Programme North Munster Project revealed that it transversed the line of the rampart and extended for a total distance of 90m, terminating in broken ground on the W and SE sides of the cashel. The line of the wall was centred on the cashel. The cashel appears to have been built on a platform (CL042-074026-), possibly of earlier date than the hillfort, and also revealed during the 1994 clearance. The cashel is not centrally placed on the platform. Detailed survey also revealed an earlier enclosure (CL042-074003-) extending S and E of the cashel. (Condit and Grogan 2005, 123-4)
