Ringfort - cashel

The National Monuments Service's description

On a very gentle E-facing slope, in pasture overlooking the Boolree river. Depicted as a large enclosure named Caherloghan on all OS historic mapping. A roughly circular area (c. 40m N-S; c. 38m E-W) defined by the grass-covered remains of a stone wall (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.6m; Wth at top 3.4m; overall Wth 10.7m). There is a possible entrance (Wth 6m) at SW, where the wall is lower and there is a gradual slope leading up into the interior. The 1840 edition of the OS 6-inch map depicts a field boundary (long-axis NE-SW) truncating the SE arc of the monument, however the 25-inch OS map and the 1921 edition of the OS 6-inch map depicts the field boundary abutting to SE. The boundary may have been incorporated into the enclosing elements, possibly explaining the increased wall dimensions (Wth at top 5m) at this location. There are traces of a possible fosse (Wth at base 7m; D 0.2m) SW-W but this is not conclusive as the fosse area is very broad and shallow, with rock outcrop visible to the S. The interior is mainly grass covered with occasional large clumps of vegetation and several trees. There are also some flags of limestone rock outcrop evident. A drystone wall (L 32m; H 0.4-0.45m; overall Wth 4.25m) (long-axis NNW-SSE) extends across the interior, off-centre to E and there is a gap (L 2m) at its SSE end. There is a hut site (CL035-044002-) and a house site (CL035-044003-) abutting this wall to E, at the N end. A second hut site (CL035-044001-) is within the SW sector.
