Architectural fragment

In a graveyard (CL017-066002-) which also contains a late-15th/16th century church (CL017-066001-). A number of architectural fragments lie throughout the graveyard, some reused as grave-markers. Among them are two probable 13th-century door jambstones: one (L 0.28m; Wth 0.21m; H 0.35m) has two orders and the second (H 0.2m) has two matching orders. The graveyard also contains a tall stone with 18th-century egg-and-dart decoration and Large (2011) noted several other architectural fragments including barge stones, roof corbels and jambstones. Macnamara (1901, 361) suggested that some of the architectural fragments reused as grave-markers were taken from a demolished mortuary chapel built against the exterior face of the church’s E gable in 1735 by Thomas MacGorman of Inchiquin. One grave-marker which is part of a crest with a man with a spear on a small horse may be a ‘stone with armorial bearings’ that was found within the MacGorman mortuary chapel in 1839 (Comber 1997, 15).
