Ringfort - cashel

The National Monuments Service's description

In pasture on a gentle rise on a S-facing slope with good views to the S, overlooked by higher ground to the N and E, c. 70m W of a stream which forms the townland boundary. Hachured and named ‘Caherlassaleehan’ on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). Noted by Westropp (1905, 361) among the named monuments in Killaspuglonane parish. A circular cashel (int. diam. 19m) defined by a stone wall (Wth 2.45m; int. H 0.35-0.55m; ext. H 0.4m) with inner and outer faces surviving for much of its course, and completely overgrown with brambles to E. Where no wall facing survives the wall is visible as a grass-covered stony mound (Wth 3m; H 0.5m). To the S the wall has been reduced to a scarp (L 7m; ext. H 0.4m). Two gaps (Wth 2.9m) run through the wall at NNW and at SE. The interior slopes gently down to S and is covered in reeds with no visible internal features. The N perimeter abuts a stone field wall.
