Ringfort - cashel

The National Monuments Service's description

On gently undulating ground in rough pasture within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Described by Westropp (1915, 263) as ‘the lowest courses of a well built ring wall … of excellent masonry.’ This very poorly preserved subcircular cashel (int. dims. 24.5m E-W; 23m N-S) is defined by a double-faced stone wall (Wth 2m; int. H 0.15-0.3m; ext. H 0.2-0.4m) from ENE to ESE, a low scarp (H 0.4m) from ESE to W, and a low grassed-over stone spread (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.2m) from W to ENE. Inner wall-facing is visible between W and NW. A series of narrow terraces (Wth c. 2m; H c. 0.5m) to the SW of the cashel are the result of quarrying.
