Ringfort - cashel

The National Monuments Service's description

In reclaimed rough pastureland on the W limits of an extensive band of limestone pavement, within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). The land slopes steeply to the E and S. Indicated on the OS 25-inch plan (1897) and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This subcircular cashel (ext. dims. 25.6m E-W; 22m N-S) is defined by a double-faced stone wall (Wth 1.5-2.5m; int. H 0.2-0.5m; ext. H 0.6-1.7m). The inner wall-face (H 0.2-0.5m) is most visible from E to S; elsewhere it is obscured by rubble and vegetation. The well-preserved outer wall-face (Wth 0.5-0.8m) is composed of large horizontally laid stones. Two sets of vertical joints are visible in it: one at SW (1.4m apart), the other at NNW (1.6m apart). There is a modern animal gap at SSW. A relatively modern structure (L 2m; Wth 1.3m; H 1.5), marked as a sheepfold on the OS 25-inch plan (1897), is built against the outer wall-face at NE. Its N side has collapsed. Within the interior a grass-covered cairn runs from NNE to SE and there is a larger similar cairn at its S end. Two irregular curvilinear grass-covered banks (Wth c. 2m; H 0.5m) extend from the wall at W. A possible stone-lined drain is visible in the wall spread at SE. A fulacht fia (CL009-188----) lies c. 104m to the E.
