The National Monuments Service's description
On top of a prominent hillock in undulating pastureland with wide views all around. Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map, and named 'Moat' on the 1842 ed. and 'Mote' on the 1920. Listed as 'Barrow' in the RMP (1996). This bowl-barrow comprises a flat-topped steep-sided subcircular mound (base dims. 18.3m N-S; 12.6m E-W; diam. at top 3.3-3.6m; H over fosse 2.3-2.45m) enclosed by a flat-based and rush-covered fosse (av. Wth at base 3m; Wth at top 7.5m), and a round-topped outer bank (av. Wth 5.5m; int. H 1-1.85m; av. ext. H 0.3m), which is overgrown from N-SSW. At W some of the central mound has been eroded or dug away (Cunningham 1980, 13), revealing its earthen composition mixed with a few shale pebbles. Westropp (1915, 57) described a ‘berm’ (Wth 0.91-1.83m; H 0.91m) around the base of the central mound, and another (Wth 2.74m) on the inner face of the bank, neither of which were visible during an inspection in 1998. A field boundary extends NNW-SSE through the E part of the monument, crossing the bank and cutting through the fosse. There is a stepped barrow (CL008-034----) c. 126m to the ESE.
