Megalithic tomb - wedge tomb

On generally level mixed rough pasture and exposed limestone pavement, with land rising slightly to the N but wide views elsewhere, and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL005-227004-). Listed as a wedge tomb by de Valera and Ó Nualláin (1989, 134). This mostly collapsed tomb is orientated E-W, and is embedded in the centre of a subcircular mound (5.5m N-S; 5.5m E-W; H 0.65-0.8m). Some loose stones along the mound’s N side may be part of a later field wall which runs ENE-WSW across the monument. The tomb survives as an E-W line of three collapsed capstone slabs. The E slab (L c. 1.8m; Wth 1.4m; T 0.1-0.14m) has an E-W crack through it. The middle capstone (L 1.7m; Wth 1.7m; T 0.1-0.2m) is cracked into three pieces at its E end, suggesting that perhaps this capstone and that to the E are two broken parts of a single fragmented slab. A third capstone slab (L 2m; Wth 1.35m; T 0.2m) lies partly beneath the SW end of the middle slab. Just S of the middle capstone piece is a tilted but earthfast upright slab (L 1.45m; min. H 1.1m; T 0.07-0.12m), orientated E-W, which may be part of the tomb’s S side. Another upright stone may be part of the tomb’s N side; however, it is mostly covered by the N edge of the E fallen capstone slab. Some 3m W of the W capstone piece—i.e., beyond the mound—is a small, upright stone (L 1.5m; min. H 0.7m; T 0.2m) orientated-S which tilts to the W. There is a cist (CL005-217----) 6m to the NNE, and another cist (CL005-218----) 86m to the ENE.
