Ringfort - cashel

On a narrow N-S terrace in the E side of the Caher valley with rising ground immediately to E and a steep fall to W, within a multiperiod field system (CL005-014001-). Indicated on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as an ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996).

A large poorly preserved oval cashel (int. dims. 42m N-S; 38m E-W) defined by a grassed-over stone spread (Wth 2.3-3.5m; H 0.2-0.5m) with surviving outer facing-stones and an original entrance gap (Wth 1m) at NNE. The entrance is flanked on its SE side by a large flag stone (L 1.2m; H 0.6m; T 0.18m) laid transversely across the wall line and to the NW by four horizontally coursed flags. The foundations of a large rectangular building (CL005-067002-) lie in the centre and to the E of this a short right-angled length of grassed over stone spread may be the remains of a second internal building. A modern wall runs along on top of the outer facing and a second entrance gap (Wth 0.6m) at S appears to be a modern. An animal pen abuts the later wall running on the line of the cashel at N. Another enclosure (CL005-255----) is located c. 30m to the SSE.
