The church was built thanks to the meeting of two talented individuals: Reverend Father Boiteau, director of the minor seminary and parish priest from 1934 to 1947, and the municipal engineer Huet. Built in replacement of an older building erected in 1858, which had become obsolete and too small, at a time of full expansion for the village, it stands at the end of the town facing the large hotel and near the minor seminary. The reconstruction project is due to Father Paul Boiteau, Spiritan, who arrived in Réunion in 1927 and was assigned to the minor seminary of Cilaos from its opening as sub-director. He subsequently succeeds Father Mage as superior and becomes parish priest of Cilaos in 1934. The project is drawn up in 1936 by Huet, municipal engineer of Saint-Louis, who proposes a building constructed entirely in concrete, incorporating the original church. The work continues from 1937 to 1940. The furnishings executed by the carpenter Irénée Accot, first mayor of Cilaos, are completed in 1942. The church, of basilical plan and oriented, comprises three bays preceded by a gallery and flanked by narrow aisles themselves topped by lateral galleries. To the east is attached a wide transept with little projection at the crossing of which rises a quadripartite vault on a square plan. The whole is broadly lit by means of high lateral windows pierced at the level of the galleries and the transept. Of resolutely contemporary design, the church has retained all its original strength and has not been modified.
