Historique
Construit en 1874, le marché couvert et la Justice de Paix de la Grand'Anse fut l'ancien marché couvert du bourg du Carbet. En 1992, l'ancien marché est transformé en Galerie d'Histoire et de la Mer, permettant la découverte et l'histoire de l'implantation des Amérindiens et de l'univers de la pêche et de la mer. En 2013, il était prévu que l'ancien marché soit réhabilité afin de retrouver sa fonction d'origine, mais le projet n'a pas aboutit. Ce marché est situé au centre bourg du Carbet à proximité de l'église et du presbytère bénéficiant tous deux d'une protection monument historique. Il a été transformé et réaffecté en galerie d'histoire et de la mer. C'est un mélange entre le style créole traditionnel et le style Baltard. La volumétrie n'a pas été altérée. Les anses en panier ont été transformées en arcs tendus. Il y a des parements de briques notamment au niveau des allèges créées de part et d'autre. Ces transformations n'altèrent pas la volumétrie du bâtiment et sont réversibles. Des aménagements légers ont été effectués à l'intérieur afin d'accueillir la galerie d'histoire et de la mer.
Description
Le marché rectangulaire est doté d'une construction en bois, à deux niveaux dont un étage supérieur partiel. Il supporte trois niveaux de toitures en pente constituées de tôles et des combles à surcroit. Le rez-de-chaussée est totalement fermé par des grilles métalliques, encadrées par des arcades. Certaines grilles ont été depuis obturées par des panneaux en maçonnerie recouverts de briquettes. Des persiennes en bois constituent les façades du 1er étage et de l'étage supérieur partiel et permettent une aération naturelle . Le marché possède 4 ouvertures situées sur chacune de ses façades. L'ancien marché couvert repose sur un socle avec un emmarchement. Même si le marché semble avoir gardé ses caractéristiques d'origine, il est constatable que l'horloge positionnée sur le fronton du marché a été remplacé par une signalétique indiquant l'appellation actuelle de la structure : «Galerie d'Histoire et de la Mer». De plus sur les façades latérales le bois a été déposé au profit d'un autre matériau et certaines grilles ont été briqué afin de masquer tout le rez-de-chaussée de l'ancien marché couvert.
