Historique
La construction d'une Maison du Peuple débute en 1937 et s'achève en 1950. L'édifice est inauguré en 1953. La fonction initiale du bâtiment est reconnaissable par ses dispositions et un décor qui s'adaptent à son utlisation actuelle. Lieu de rassemblement ouvrier, il abrite une salle de sports (reconvertie aujourd'hui en petite salle de spectacles) attenante à la grande salle dédiée aux fêtes et aux réunions. Le décor évoque les arts ainsi que le travail (travail de la terre, construction). De 1939 à 1942, l'artiste Jean Burkhalter décore la coupole de la grande salle d'une fresque symbolisant les signes du zodiaque et orne les murs de compositions de style Arts-Déco. Des décorateurs de la manufacture de Sèvres interviennent également comme en témoignent les panneaux ornementaux en céramique visibles dans l'actuel café du Théâtre.

History
The construction of a Maison du Peuple began in 1937 and was completed in 1950. The building was inaugurated in 1953. The initial function of the building is recognisable from its layout and a decoration which adapts to its current use. A place of working-class gathering, it houses a sports hall (now reconverted into a small performance hall) adjoining the great hall dedicated to celebrations and meetings. From 1939 to 1942, the artist Jean Burkhalter decorates the cupola of the great hall with a fresco symbolising the signs of the zodiac and adorns the walls with compositions in Art-Deco style.
