Historique

History
The order of Grandmont was founded by Etienne de Muret, from Auvergne. At his death in 1124, the order settled at Grandmont. An oratory and basic lodgings were constructed, then a church in 1166. The buildings of the abbey, many times repaired or rebuilt, were so one last time in the 18th century. The abbey was entirely rebuilt from 1732 to 1768, shortly before the dissolution of the order in 1772. The buildings were demolished in 1817. The pond of the Savages, the pond of the Oaks, the small pond of the Oaks and the former pond of the Chambers are situated upstream of the remains of the abbey. Like the other hermit brothers, the Grandmontains were great consumers of fish, meat being forbidden. In order to ensure the presence of fish ponds and lakes nearby, they therefore acquired the existing facilities and improved them. These ponds ensured important fish-farming activity but also the drainage of marshy land. The elements constituting each pond are: the carriage way, the supply drains, the valves for level management, the numerous canals as well as various fish-breeding pools. This monumental hydraulic system, characteristic of the Limousin landscape, is representative of the manner of managing water in the region.
