Historique

History
The fortified house of Crouailles is distinguished by its architectural interest and the originality of its layout, from the 15th to the 18th century. The lower court or seigneurial farm has the particularity of comprising two well-defined courts with no discontinuity in their outer enclosure walls. Built to the north-east of the two lower courts, in an enclave, the fortified house was once enclosed by a moat filled in during the 20th century, still partly visible on the west side. It forms a compact ensemble of trapezoidal plan comprising two parallel dwelling blocks separated by an interior court, dwellings backed along their main axis against the short north and south sides of the quadrilateral. The dwelling situated to the south underwent an expansion in the second half of the 14th century (construction of a second building). The enclosure walls are crowned by a parapet walk with, at the south-east angle, a small watch turret. The main entrance was preceded by a bridge crossing the moat. In the 18th century, the northern dwelling was modernized and better lit and a Mansard roof was installed.
