Historique

History
A first lord of Chiré is cited in 1351. Abandoned for a long time, the castle had partially collapsed in 1974. Dominating a rocky spur, the polygonal building was thus naturally defended on its north and east flanks, built without flanking towers. Towers of round, horseshoe and square defence protect the south and west curtain walls preceded, moreover, by a moat and framed by a triangular outer ward comprising outbuildings, barn and dovecote. The entrance chatelet consists of two towers joined by a gun turret above which the year 1583 is read between two grooves of the drawbridge. The towers received, in their axial part, rectangular openings later than the construction (14th-15th century). The main dwelling is found built against the south-west wing. Partly ruined, it is pierced by large moulded windows of the 16th century. Rooms with 17th-century fireplaces are placed along the west curtain. The east wing, without openings, must have served as a guardroom before being used as an outbuilding. The north wing which closed the inner courtyard has completely collapsed. The flanking towers and curtain walls are pierced with gun-ports, most of them with loopholes (late 15th - early 16th century) and gun-arrow-slits probably older (14th-15th century). An external staircase whose round-arched door is dated 1644 was added behind the entrance chatelet to ensure its connection with the south-west main dwelling. This castle built for defence, without a keep, which dates from the 14th-15th century, is a rare example of this type of construction in the region.
