History
This important castle site built in several periods between the 15th and 16th centuries constitutes one of the strongholds of the Marches of Brittany and Poitou. The castle of Montaigu forms a complex composed of curtain walls, ditches, underground chambers, gun rooms, water gate and fortified dikes constituting a site of major archaeological and architectural interest in the history of the fortification of the provinces of Brittany and Poitou. It is considered a strategic node in the conflict between Protestants and Catholics during the Wars of Religion and subsequently between Royalists and Republicans during the Wars of Vendée. This historical place constitutes, on a regional scale, one of the best-preserved examples despite the restorations undertaken in the 19th century.
