Pour répondre au rapide essor du trafic ferroviaire de marchandises, de voyageurs et de matériel militaire, la S.N.C.F. fait bâtir une deuxième gare à Amiens au milieu des années 1870 dans le quartier Saint-Roch. Bombardée en 1918, elle est reconstruite à l'identique dans l'entre-deux-guerres. Suite à de nouveaux bombardements aériens en 1940 puis 1944, la S.N.C.F. fait appel à Pierre Dufau, urbaniste et architecte en chef de la reconstruction d'Amiens, pour élever un nouveau bâtiment (1944-1947). La structure des deux pavillons latéraux est conservée et dotée d'une nouvelle enveloppe tandis que le corps central est entièrement repensé. Le dessin général restitue les proportions, la monumentalité et quelques éléments de vocabulaire classique de la gare du XIXe siècle. Le langage de Pierre Dufau est toutefois résolument moderne, tant dans le rationalisme et l'économie de moyens du projet, dans la sobriété des volumes que dans le choix des matériaux. La pondération des masses, l'équilibre des lignes, le contraste des couleurs et l'apport décoratif des sculptures d'Albert Roze et d'Emile Morlaix sont caractéristiques des réalisations de Pierre Dufau dans le cadre du plan de reconstruction à Amiens. To respond to the rapid growth in railway traffic for goods, passengers and military equipment, the S.N.C.F. has a second station built in Amiens in the middle of the 1870s in the Saint-Roch district.
