Le mémorial national sud-africain réalisé par l'architecte Herbert Baker préfigure les mémoriaux indien de Neuve-Chapelle (Pas-de-Calais) et néo-zélandais de Tyne Cot à Passendale (Belgique). Il a été érigé sur le lieu du sacrifice de la brigade sud-africaine chargée de tenir le Bois Delville « coûte que coûte » dont seulement 143 rescapés furent relevés le 20 juillet 1916. Il est constitué d'une arche centrale surmontée d'une statue en bronze, due au sculpteur britannique Alfred Turner, conçue en 1926 et représentant Castor et Pollux tenant un cheval. Le cimetière de Delville Wood abrite 5523 corps dont 152 sud-africains.

The South African national memorial executed by the architect Herbert Baker prefigures the Indian memorial of Neuve-Chapelle (Pas-de-Calais) and the New Zealand memorial of Tyne Cot at Passendale (Belgium). It was erected at the place of the sacrifice of the South African brigade charged with holding Delville Wood "at all costs" of which only 143 survivors were evacuated on 20 July 1916. It consists of a central arch surmounted by a bronze statue, due to British sculptor Alfred Turner, conceived in 1926 and representing Castor and Pollux holding a horse. The cemetery of Delville Wood houses 5523 bodies of which 152 are South African.
