History
Organized near the village of the same name, the British military cemetery of Louvencourt is one of the first cemeteries erected by the Imperial War Graves Commission. Trapezoidal in shape, it houses the headstones of 227 combatants of the First World War: 151 from the Commonwealth and 76 French. It is surrounded by a perimeter wall in Portland stone, and adorned with a staircase leading to the departmental road. The French headstones found there, in stone and decorated with a sculpted Adrian helmet, differ from the model of the headstones of French military necropolises. This cemetery considerably influenced the architecture and construction rules of future Commonwealth military cemeteries.
