En 1467, le chantier de fortification de l'hôtel et de la maison des abbesses de Sainte-Croix de Poitiers débute après autorisation de Louis XI, à condition d'établir murs, tours, fossés, pont-levis... L'ensemble se composait alors d'un corps de bâtiment à étage, détruit au début du 20e siècle ; d'un corps principal flanqué d'une tour carrée. Autour du logis se trouvaient l'église paroissiale et la chapelle Sainte-Marthe. Des aménagements défensifs englobaient et s'appuyaient sur les deux édifices religieux. L'enceinte était formée d'une tour et d'un pont-levis surplombant un fossé. Trois types de pierres furent employés : des grisons (granit) , des chailz (silex) et des jovenetières (pierres). Aujourd'hui ne subsiste que le logis des dames de Valses avec une partie de leur métairie. Les bâtiments sont en forme de L. A l'intérieur, subsistent trois cheminées du 15e siècle, un escalier en vis en oeuvre, une cave voûtée, une charpente ancienne et des huisseries 15e.

History
In 1467, the fortification work on the hotel and house of the abbesses of Sainte-Croix de Poitiers began after authorization by Louis XI, on condition of establishing walls, towers, ditches, drawbridge... The ensemble then consisted of a single-storey building, destroyed in the early 20th century; a main body flanked by a square tower. Around the main dwelling were found the parish church and the Sainte-Marthe chapel. Defensive arrangements encompassed and were supported on the two religious buildings. The enclosure was formed of a tower and a drawbridge overhanging a ditch. Three types of stone were employed: grisons (granite), chailz (flint) and jovenetières (stones). Today only the dwelling of the ladies of Valses remains with part of their farm. The buildings are L-shaped. Inside, three 15th-century fireplaces survive, a spiral staircase in opus caementicium, a vaulted cellar, an old roof structure and 15th-century door frames.
