L'idée du monument semble remonter à 1919, mais ne se réalise pas. En 1937, dans le cadre du rapprochement avec les Etats-Unis, un comité national est créé afin d'ériger un monument symbole célébrant l'action de l'armée américaine pendant la Première guerre mondiale, et de l'armée française pendant la guerre d'indépendance américaine. Un concours restreint sur invitation à sept architectes est ouvert pour la création d'un monument devant comporter la statue équestre du général Pershing et celle de La Fayette. L'épreuve est remportée par Jacques Carlu et le monument doit être inauguré le 6 octobre 1937 en présence du général Pershing. La statue de La Fayette par P. W. Bartlett (1908) paraît avoir été empruntée pour l'occasion au square du Carrousel. Celle du général Pershing, réalisée par J. Costa, en plâtre, a été très dégradée et déposée en 1941.

History
The idea for the monument seems to date back to 1919, but was not realised. In 1937, as part of rapprochement with the United States, a national committee was created to erect a monument symbolising the action of the American army during the First World War, and of the French army during the American War of Independence. A restricted competition by invitation to seven architects was opened for the creation of a monument which was to include an equestrian statue of General Pershing and one of Lafayette. The competition was won by Jacques Carlu and the monument was to be inaugurated on 6 October 1937 in the presence of General Pershing. The statue of Lafayette by P. W. Bartlett (1908) appears to have been borrowed for the occasion from the Carrousel square. That of General Pershing, executed by J. Costa, in plaster, was greatly damaged and removed in 1941.
