L’abbé d’Ancretiéville-Saint-Victor, Bernard de Mathan, fit un vœu à la Vierge. Il s’engagea à faire ériger une statue en son honneur, à la croisée des chemins, si son village et ses habitants étaient épargnés durant la seconde guerre mondiale. Malgré les bombardements et la mobilisation des hommes du village, tous s’en sortirent indemnes. Aussi l’abbé entrepris des démarches dès 1946 pour réaliser son vœu. Sa sœur, Solange de Mathan, était une amie de Carlo Sarabezolles et sa femme. Aussi c’est sans doute par son intermédiaire que le curé se tourna vers l’artiste pour la commande de la statue. La correspondance conservée de l’artiste indique que Carlo Sarrabezolle travaille déjà sur ce projet en 1946. Il a réalisé une maquette en plâtre qu’il conserve dans son atelier.
Description
La statue se situe non loin du domaine de Saint-Victor. Elle est installée sur un petit promontoire traité en herbe desservi par quelques marches en béton. La statue aux formes simples et massives représente la Vierge présentant l’Enfant Jésus tenant la carte de la France. Elle mesure environ 4 mètres de haut.

History
The Abbé of Ancretiéville-Saint-Victor, Bernard de Mathan, made a vow to the Virgin.
