Historique

History
Sainte-Barbe college, a private secular establishment, is one of the rare survivors of medieval colleges. Suppressed at the Revolution, it recovered its reputation in the 19th century. This institution initially grouped together a grand and a middle college, built by Labrouste in 1841, and completed by a preparatory school. The two colleges formed two quadrilaterals positioned behind the site of the new Sainte-Geneviève library. They were demolished in the 1960s. Only the buildings of the preparatory school erected in 1884 by Lheureux were preserved. The façades of the current college, of eclectic style, combine in a scholarly research millstone, stone and brick. Although having undergone a certain number of interior transformations, the establishment has preserved the essential features of its layout, in particular the staircases. The great refectory is decorated with mosaics executed by Facchina; the physics and chemistry amphitheatre and the drawing room possess metal structures.
