A la recherche d'un local pour son école de dessin gratuite, la municipalité porte son choix en 1820 sur un bâtiment de l'ancien couvent des Ursulines construit en 1757. Mercadier propose un projet de bâtiment de style néoclassique. La décoration intérieure et extérieure est confiée au peintre et dessinateur Jacques François Carbillet. En 1866, des travaux de transformation sont exécutés afin de réserver à cet édifice la fonction de musée. En 1895, le musée prend le nom de Vivant Denon. Décor de la façade réalisé au début du 20e siècle. Le musée actuel se compose de trois bâtiments disposés autour d'une cour : l'ancienne école de dessin de plan rectangulaire ; une aile du 18e siècle faisant partie de l'ancien couvent ; une galerie de style néo-toscan construite en 1866.

History
In search of a location for its free drawing school, the municipality made its choice in 1820 on a building of the old convent of the Ursulines constructed in 1757. Mercadier proposes a project for a building in neoclassical style. Interior and exterior decoration is entrusted to the painter and draughtsman Jacques François Carbillet. In 1866, transformation works are executed in order to reserve for this edifice the function of museum. In 1895, the museum takes the name of Vivant Denon.
