Historique
Description

History
The "château de Cros" takes the title of "château" only very late, in the second half of the 19th century when the Vacheron family undertakes modifications to an old farmland estate to make it a luxury secondary residence. The estate was built in two phases within a small agricultural estate whose buildings appear clearly on the Napoleonic cadastre. Julien Richard-Vitton (1838-1919) was captain of the mobile guards during the 1870 war, general councillor of the Rhône and mayor of Azolette. During the war, she who was to become his wife, Catherine Vacheron, is said to have been among the first military nurses. No particular activity is known for Julien after his service. The couple's life nevertheless seems to have been marked by Madame's receptions, much to Monsieur's distaste, who took refuge in his pavilion. The estate was built around 1899 under Catherine's direction and jointly under the direction of architect Jean Burel and engineer Louis Lombard or Louis Lombard-Gérin. Jean Burel is cited several times in the journal La Construction lyonnaise as architect for the Gas Company. La Construction lyonnaise informs us on the occasion of the awarding of the silver medal to Jules Saint-Sorny, head locksmith at Brunard, that this highly skilled worker worked under the orders of several architects including Burel. Louis Lombard-Gérin (1848-1918) was an electrical engineer; he filed a patent for the self-propelled trolley in 1900.
Description
The dwelling is constructed in very dark ashlar made of granitic stone difficult to cut and covered with slate. White limestone ashlar enhances the composition through its clearer lines and framings of openings, likewise, the architectural details which become visible as one approaches the buildings embellish it. The terraces in front of the dwelling are accessible after passing through a remarkable wrought-iron gate. A vast pavilion faces the dwelling in the courtyard. One of the facades of the main dwelling is decorated with bas-reliefs representing the lion of Belfort and the cathedral of Fourvière. Catherine and Julien had participated in the 1870 war, she as a nurse and he as a captain of the mobile guard. Decorated with the Legion of Honour, the medal appears on the decor. Below are inscribed the names of the patrons. The "castle" of Cros is difficult to describe because of the complexity of its composition, complexity probably inherited in part from the arrangement of the old buildings. It should be noted the pavilion of the master of the house which is located in the courtyard and whose decorations alternate from neo-gothic style to Art Nouveau, inside, the style of the fittings and in particular of the woodwork is closer to the English tonality of the Arts and Crafts type. Likewise, the living room with its improbable terracotta fireplace and stone floor honour the materials. From the entrance and in many rooms, stained-glass windows with designs representing flora and fauna illuminate the spaces. Two large stained-glass windows frame the fireplace. The dining room has a large stone fireplace with a mantel formerly bearing a coat of arms, and a very high roof structure partly self-supporting surprises by its height. A small living room is entirely decorated with woodwork, including on the fireplace and covered with wallpaper signed "Yung Lambert 1901". The floors are covered with coloured cement tiles of great quality and depicting carpets. Original technical elements draw attention: rolling iron shutters with their mechanism, a large bathroom with its shower, old wash basins and a lead sink in the kitchen. A part of the dwelling used by the family has been restored to current taste, the rest has surprisingly remained in its original state.
