Historique

History
From 1275 onwards, an enclosure ensures the protection of the town. A residence is erected at the most vulnerable location of the enclosure, in its south-west corner. Its construction was either contemporary with that of the enclosure, or carried out in its wake, the building being mentioned as early as 1289. The building subsequently underwent numerous alterations. A first campaign takes place in the 16th century: oriel, polygonal turret, interior decoration. In the first half of the 17th century, the addition of an extra storey and its roof structure to the castle, which then comprises a main west body, extended by a wing in a right-angled return to the south. The new owners wish to transform the building into a hotel for spa visitors who come to benefit from the mineral water spring discovered in 1603. In the 18th century, the castle wing loses a storey and the openings are entirely reworked. At this time, the buildings are arranged in a U-shape around a narrow courtyard. The hotel function continues until the 19th century. In 1903, the castle and adjoining buildings are acquired by the congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence of Ribeauvillé with a view to establishing a retirement home. This entails interior fittings in the castle (staircase, chapel) and the creation of a garden from the beginning of the sisters' installation. In the 1970s, it was decided to construct two new buildings housing bedrooms and a chapel which replaced older dependencies. The refectory building and the dwelling house flanking the entrance were maintained in place.
