Edifice très caractéristique de l'introduction des principes de l'architecture classique française en Alsace à la fin du XVIIe siècle et au début du XVIIIe siècle, la Caserne royale de Lauterbourg est construite selon le système répétitif préconisé par Vauban, organisé sur la base de ce qu'il appelle un « corps de caserne » comprenant une cellule élémentaire dont on peut accoler « à l'envi » un nombre variable de cellules identiques suivant les besoins et le terrain disponible. Ici, on compte cinq modules prévus, dont seulement trois ont été réalisés. A very characteristic edifice of the introduction of the principles of French classical architecture in Alsace at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, the Caserne royale de Lauterbourg is built according to the repetitive system recommended by Vauban, organized on the basis of what he called a "corps de caserne" comprising an elementary cell to which "at will" a variable number of identical cells could be added according to requirements and available land.
