Ferme édifiée en 1805 à un emplacement où s'élevaient déjà des bâtiments avant la Révolution. Antoine Le Bel, capitoul, achète les terrains qui renferment des sables bitumineux. Durant plus d'un siècle, les Le Bel développent la mine tout en résidant dans une ferme château reconstruite à partir de 1805. Dans son état actuel, il ne subsiste aucun bâtiment antérieur au 19e siècle. L'ancienne exploitation comporte une grande demeure de plan carré avec logement connexe ; une maison en pan de bois qui serait l'ancien laboratoire d'Achille Le Bel, édifié en 1813 ; un ensemble de trois bâtiments agricoles qui furent élevés à partir de 1821 puis agrandis entre 1832 et 1835. Un style régionaliste prévaut pour chacun des bâtiments. Dans la seconde moitié du 19e siècle, la ferme-château et l'exploitation pétrolière connaissent une période de grande prospérité. Projet original et précurseur, tout à la fois exploitation agricole, berceau de l'étude et de l'exploitation du pétrole, lieu de naissance de la chimie agricole, station agronomique expérimentale, la ferme château Le Bel est l'un des derniers témoignages architecturaux d'une exceptionnelle aventure scientifique et industrielle alsacienne qui dépasse, par ses implications et ses conséquences, les limites régionales.

History
Farm built in 1805 at a location where buildings already stood before the Revolution. Antoine Le Bel, capitoul, purchases the land which contains bituminous sands. For more than a century, the Le Bels develop the mine while residing in a farm-château rebuilt from 1805 onwards. In its present state, no building earlier than the 19th century remains. The former operation comprises a large residence of square plan with adjoining accommodation; a timber-framed house which would be the former laboratory of Achille Le Bel, built in 1813; a group of three agricultural buildings which were erected from 1821 and enlarged between 1832 and 1835. A regionalist style prevails for each of the buildings. In the second half of the 19th century, the farm-château and the petroleum operation experience a period of great prosperity. An original and pioneering project, both an agricultural operation, birthplace of the study and exploitation of petroleum, birthplace of agricultural chemistry, experimental agronomic station, the Le Bel farm-château is one of the last architectural testimonies to an exceptional Alsatian scientific and industrial adventure which transcends, in its implications and consequences, regional boundaries.
