En Roussillon, ces barracas constituaient un type d'habitat généralement saisonnier. Modernes par leur principe isothermique et leur adaptation au milieu écologique, ces édifices répondaient parfaitement à leur fonction originelle d'habitat-outil de travail. Les pêcheurs les considéraient comme le prolongement naturel, à terre, de leurs bateaux. Ces cabanes en sagnes ou sanills étaient auto-construits avec des matériaux tirés du milieu naturel : roseaux des marais, cannes de Provence, vieux mâts de barque et, par la suite, cartons goudronnés, tôle ondulée, lorsque les matériaux naturels se sont raréfiés.

History
In Roussillon, these barracas constituted a type of habitat generally seasonal in nature. Modern in their isothermic principle and their adaptation to the ecological environment, these buildings perfectly fulfilled their original function as a dwelling-work tool. The fishermen considered them as the natural extension, on land, of their boats. These cabanes en sagnes or sanills were self-built with materials drawn from the natural environment: marsh reeds, Provence canes, old boat masts and, subsequently, tarred cardboard, corrugated iron, when natural materials became scarcer.
