"En 1921, la municipalité demande au sculpteur Raoul Mabru, de Royat, de faire deux propositions de maquettes pour un monument aux morts et interroge les habitants pour le choix de l'une des deux, ainsi que sur le lieu de son érection. L'emplacement choisi est en face du nouveau cimetière, sur un petit promontoire sur lequel s'élève une chapelle néo-médiévale construite en 1876. Celle-ci est aménagée à cette occasion afin de recueillir les dépouilles des soldats français et alliés morts dans les hôpitaux de Royat et de rendre hommage aux soldats natifs de Royat. Désormais qualifiée de « chapelle du Souvenir », elle affiche ces dédicaces sur le tympan de la porte d'entrée et sur des plaques apposées sur la façade. Par la porte désormais vitrée et défendue par une ferronnerie on peut voir les plaques commémoratives individuelles et collectives disposées à l'intérieur. Réalisé selon un marché passé en 1922 entre la municipalité et le sculpteur, le monument est achevé fin 1924 et inauguré le 26 avril 1925. Il sera honoré en 1927 du prix Mège par l'Académie des Sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Clermont, comme étant la meilleure sculpture des cinq dernières années."

"Il s'agit d'un groupe sculpté reposant sur un socle de granit gris épannelé à quatre degrés, provenant de Saint-Julien-Laveste, portant deux plaques commémoratives gravées des noms des morts et de ceux des grands champs de bataille. Le groupe, réalisé en pierre blanche de Chauvigny (Vienne), comprend cinq personnages en ronde-bosse : à la manière d'une Déploration du Christ, sont disposés de part et d'autre d'un soldat gisant, à ses pieds et à sa tête, deux couples de personnages. Le soldat est étendu sur un rocher, un bras gauche replié sur la poitrine. A ses pieds, se tiennent deux paysans auvergnats âgés, représentant le père et la mère. L'homme debout, la tête nue baissée, serre contre sa poitrine un chapeau à bords. Il porte une blouse plissée, un pantalon large et des sabots. Son visage barré par une large moustache tombante, exprime la douleur par ses traits très creusés. A sa gauche, la mère est agenouillée les mains jointes. Elle porte des sabots, un grand manteau et un bonnet tuyauté. Son visage également très creusé et ridé exprime par ses yeux mi-clos une intense prière. A la tête du soldat, se tiennent la veuve et son enfant. La femme, habillée de vêtements « modernes » et du chapeau voilé de la veuve, se tient debout la tête penchée vers son fils qu'elle tient de dos par les épaules. Son visage aux traits réguliers marquent une grande tristesse par les yeux mi-clos et cernés et la bouche tombante. L'enfant au visage poupin tient contre lui, derrière la tête de son père, une couronne de laurier."

History
In 1921, the municipality asked the sculptor Raoul Mabru, of Royat, to make two proposals for models of a war memorial and questioned the inhabitants about the choice of one of the two, as well as about the location of its erection. The chosen location is opposite the new cemetery, on a small promontory on which stands a neo-medieval chapel built in 1876. This was converted on this occasion in order to receive the remains of French and allied soldiers who died in the hospitals of Royat and to pay tribute to soldiers native to Royat. Henceforth qualified as the "Chapel of Remembrance", it displays these dedications on the tympanum of the entrance door and on plaques affixed to the façade. Through the door now glazed and defended by ironwork one can see the individual and collective commemorative plaques arranged inside. Executed according to a contract entered into in 1922 between the municipality and the sculptor, the monument was completed at the end of 1924 and inaugurated on 26 April 1925. It was honoured in 1927 with the Mège prize by the Academy of Sciences, Literature and Arts of Clermont, as being the best sculpture of the previous five years.

This is a sculpted group resting on a socle of grey granite split into four steps, coming from Saint-Julien-Laveste, bearing two commemorative plaques engraved with the names of the dead and those of the great battlefields. The group, executed in white stone from Chauvigny (Vienne), comprises five figures in the round: in the manner of a Lamentation of Christ, arranged on either side of a recumbent soldier, at his feet and at his head, two pairs of figures. The soldier is stretched out on a rock, his left arm folded over his chest. At his feet stand two elderly Auvergnat peasants, representing father and mother. The man standing, bareheaded with bowed head, presses a broad-brimmed hat against his chest. He wears a pleated smock, wide trousers and sabots. His face crossed by a long drooping moustache expresses pain through very hollowed features. To his left, the mother is kneeling with joined hands. She wears sabots, a long coat and a pleated bonnet. Her face, also very hollowed and lined, expresses intense prayer through her half-closed eyes. At the soldier's head stand the widow and her child. The woman, dressed in 'modern' clothing and the veiled hat of a widow, stands with her head bent towards her son whom she holds by the shoulders from behind. Her face with regular features shows great sadness through half-closed and dark-ringed eyes and drooping mouth. The child with a rosy face holds against him, behind his father's head, a laurel wreath.
