The Drocourt Mines company undertook, after the Second World War, the work of reconstructing the pit village for shaft no. 2, known as Nouméa. The architects Duval and Gonse were tasked with enlarging the girls' school, a former building dating from the end of the 19th century, and with constructing parish annexes flanking the church of Saint-Louis, itself located at the heart of the village and serving as the main axis in the organisation of the architectural elements. From May 1930 onwards, while the construction of the church was scarcely finished, the arrangement of the surrounding square was envisaged. However, in December 1927, while the church had not yet been built, the architects Duval and Gonse had already drawn up plans for the extension of the girls' school which consisted of constructing a wing opposite the façade of the church in order to accommodate four infant classes separated by a central vestibule.
