Le château est l'oeuvre d'un riche érudit, Alphonse Mennechet de Barival. Il est le seul élément subsistant d'un vaste ensemble original composé également de deux manoirs et d'une tour. Le château était destiné à abriter sa collection d'oeuvres d'art, en partie léguée à la ville de Saint-Quentin à sa mort, dont des pastels de Maurice Quentin de La Tour. Laissé à l'abandon depuis la dernière guerre, l'édifice est aujourd'hui une ruine envahie par la végétation. Il demeure cependant un exemple rare d'initiative muséale privée dans cette région.

History
The castle is the work of a wealthy scholar, Alphonse Mennechet de Barival. It is the only surviving element of a vast original complex also composed of two manors and a tower. The castle was intended to house his collection of works of art, partly bequeathed to the city of Saint-Quentin at his death, including pastels by Maurice Quentin de La Tour. Left abandoned since the last war, the building is today a ruin invaded by vegetation. It nonetheless remains a rare example of private museum initiative in this region.
