Historique

History
The archaeological site of Pont-Sainte-Maxence occupies a privileged position in the bend of a meander of the Oise. This site, of exceptional sedimentary richness, offers archaeological deposits preserved to a height of 5 m, in a particularly favourable geomorphological context. In addition, a set of collective burials from the final Neolithic was discovered and surveyed, of very high conservation quality. Thanks to an agreement concluded between the regional archaeology service and sand pit operators, it was possible to carry out exhaustive archaeological recordings. These recordings reveal the juxtaposed existence of habitat zones, necropolises and agricultural exploitations. In the mound sectors, very little sedimentation is observed, but near the river, the stratigraphy offers a height of approximately five metres. Peat from the early Neolithic to the final Neolithic is found there, which makes it possible to record data over approximately three thousand years. With the invention of the plough, the transition is made from peaty sedimentations to silty sedimentations. These provide valuable information on the organization of the land, habitat, as well as on modes of agricultural exploitation. But this type of structure in flood-prone areas poses major excavation problems, particularly for necropolises which suffered later fires. Finally, very complete and abundant information is available on the mounds that make up this landscape, thanks to an environmental recording, of a hydraulic character, very well preserved.
