The comtal castle is founded towards 1160. The ensemble forms a vast polygon with around twenty sides, at the angles flanked by small flat buttresses. The whole is surrounded by moats. The main dwelling is located to the south. At its eastern extremity, was located a chapel with two levels and a flat chevet of which remains the large Gothic arcade decorating the south gutter wall, in the façade of the pavilion. From the Romanesque period perhaps two levels of cellars remain, reinforced in the 17th century, and the structure of the second half of the 12th century of the entrance door on the side of the town square, under a 17th-century facing. At this time, Libéral Bruant, ordinary architect of the king, draws the plans for a new wing. The new main body is rebuilt from 1681 onwards. Before 1754, the gallery is already divided into five rooms and a corridor. During the second half of the 18th century, the Cernay pavilion (eastern part of the barracks) is rebuilt on older foundations, constituted by medieval and perhaps modern cellars. The arrival of the mobile Republican Guard in 1928 is the occasion for major works.
