Historique
L'hôpital général fut créé par lettres patentes en 1752 afin d'accueillir nombre d'indigents. Il fut aménagé en 1754 dans l'ancienne maison des pauvres du Marché au poisson. A partir de cette date, les locaux furent, à plusieurs reprises, agrandis et modifiés. En 1910, la ville mit l'hôpital à disposition de l'armée afin de servir de casernement. Cette dernière transforma les intérieurs des différents corps de bâtiment et déplaça le portail d'entrée à son emplacement actuel avec un nouveau corps de garde avant la Grande Guerre. L'ancien hôpital général forme un ensemble d'une grande rigueur, typique de cette architecture destinée à la charité, et présente des façades d'époques différentes de belle composition. La grande aile de 1754 ainsi que celle de 1786 témoignent de cette frénésie constructive dans le domaine de l'architecture hospitalière dans la seconde moitié du 18ème siècle.

History
The general hospital was created by letters patent in 1752 in order to accommodate a number of poor persons. It was fitted out in 1754 in the former poorhouse of the Fish Market. From that date, the premises were, on several occasions, enlarged and modified. In 1910, the town placed the hospital at the disposal of the army in order to serve as a barracks. The latter transformed the interiors of the different building blocks and moved the entrance portal to its current location with a new guardhouse before the First World War. The former general hospital forms an ensemble of great rigour, typical of this architecture intended for charity, and presents facades of different periods of fine composition. The great wing of 1754 as well as that of 1786 testify to this building fever in the field of hospital architecture in the second half of the 18th century.
