Historique

History
The worship of Notre-Dame de la Treille is rooted in the existence of a statue from the end of the 12th century depicting the Virgin on a throne holding the Christ Child and a sceptre. The statue is venerated in a chapel ceded to the canons of the collegiate church of Saint-Pierre where a chapel is dedicated to it around 1238-1254. At the Revolution, the collegiate church is destroyed. The chaplain of the Treille purchases the statue in 1792, hides it and hands it over to Guillaume Lefebvre d'Hennin who gives it to the parish of Sainte-Catherine. The statue is installed in the church. In 1842, to restore the importance of the worship of Notre-Dame de la Treille, the statue is transferred to the chapel on the axis of the north aisle and the altar is erected as a privileged altar in 1844. The idea of a new construction is launched in 1853. The site is quickly chosen: it is the former circus and the Motte Madame where legend situates the island at the origin of the city. The competition is launched in 1853 and specifies that the monument must be inspired by the great buildings of the first half of the 13th century. The first stone is laid in 1856 after approval of the plans. The first elevation is inspired by Chartres whereas the last is closer to Notre-Dame de Paris. The blessing of the upper church takes place in 1869, as well as that of the axial and lateral chapels. The implementation of the iconographic programme extends until 1870. In 1872, the miraculous statue is transferred there. The nave is inaugurated in 1947. The choir is inaugurated in 1956, the crossing of the transept in 1957, the two last bays of the nave in 1958. The south arm of the transept is completed in 1974. Installation of stained glass by Max Ingrand in 1963-1966. In 1990, Carlier is tasked with designing the façade by a modern project in rupture with neo-gothic.
