Historique

History
In 1959, the municipal council decided to create a ZUP and entrusted its design to Henri Chomette. The central heating plant was to supply hot water and heating to more than five thousand dwellings and collective facilities. Built simultaneously with the first phase of work on the ZUP (1968), it is an integral part of this period in the history of architecture characterized by the features of an economic situation, the period known as architectures of growth. Like the housing programme in which it is located, it presents very careful work on its built vocabulary, which combines standardized materials and traditional constructive references. But this collective heating plant is also an important testimony to the reflection on the industrial aesthetics of these buildings linked to the implementation of the policy of new towns and the creation ex nihilo of entire districts. Adapting the container to its contents, it is also a fine architectural example illustrating the technique of urban heating, designed by an architect whose production was limited in the Nord Pas-de-Calais region. Water is transported by underground pipes and then distributed in the buildings thanks to the installation of sub-stations. The pyramidal form is adopted to avoid waste of built volume. The twelve brick pillars supporting the pyramid take the form of lions named the guardians of fire. They must report the load of the metal roof structure onto the foundations while leaving a void that allows access to the interior and lighting of the lower part.
