The parish of Saint-Pierre-du-Mont is attested from the 12th century. The church, rebuilt several times, stands at the centre of the castle site, on a mound. The building overlies a crypt associated with the grotto of saint Firmin, who is said to have lived there, and the object of popular devotion. Thanks to archaeological excavations carried out in 2009, 2010 and 2011 by the team of Pascale Chevalier of Blaise-Pascal University of Clermont-Ferrand II, the history of the crypt and the church is better known. The crypt would predate the year 1000, and in its primitive form comprised three spaces, a central hall and two aisles. The 12th-century arrangements make it possible to understand that the crypt housed relics and that services were celebrated in it. The choir is rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries above the crypt, following a pentagonal plan with chamfered angles. In the 18th century, the crypt becomes a funeral chamber and a door is pierced on the east side for direct access from the cemetery.

The church presents a simple plan with a choir and a single nave. A bell tower is attached to the north. The choir and the last bay of the nave are raised owing to the presence of the crypt, which is semi-buried. The choir is vaulted on a rib vault. A decoration of figurative wall paintings was found beneath the render, corresponding to a campaign of work in the 16th century. The crypt is of tripartite structure: a central hall vaulted with a barrel vault and two smaller side halls connected to the central hall by an opening. On the west side, a round arch opens towards the vestiges of a staircase which led to the nave. The side halls are both vaulted with barrel vaults and terminate in straight walls. They are open to the west by narrow passages, situated beneath the last bay of the nave.
