Un premier projet de phare est validé par décret du Comité de salut public le 3 pluviôse de lan II (22 janvier 1794) sur la proposition du ministre de la marine Thévenard. La tour cylindrique prévue s'écroule aux deux tiers du chantier en raison d'un sol trop meuble. En 1829, la commission des phares approuve la construction d'un édifice à 200 m des ruines du premier projet. Le plan présenté le 12 mars 1835 prévoit une tour carrée à la base circulaire au sommet, d'une hauteur de 30 mètres. Finalement la tour sera entièrement carrée pour la distinguer du phare de Belle-Île. Le phare est électrifié en 1949.

History
A first lighthouse project was approved by decree of the Committee of Public Safety on 3 Pluviôse of year II (22 January 1794) on the proposal of the naval minister Thévenard. The planned cylindrical tower collapsed two-thirds of the way through construction due to excessively soft ground. In 1829, the lighthouse commission approved the construction of a building 200 m from the ruins of the first project. The plan presented on 12 March 1835 provided for a square tower with a circular base at the summit, with a height of 30 metres. Finally the tower was made entirely square to distinguish it from the Belle-Île lighthouse. The lighthouse was electrified in 1949.
